Frequently Asked Questions

What areas do you serve?

I currently serve: East Hartford, Glastonbury, Hebron, Bolton, Manchester, Rocky Hill, and Wethersfield

Are you insured and bonded?

I am fully insured through Pet Sitters Associates, LLC. You may view the coverage details at www.petsitllc.com

Are you a full-time pet sitter or will you have limited availability due to another job or school?

I am a full-time pet sitter that operates 7 days a week – 365 days a year.

What types of pets do you care for?

My specialty is Canines but I also care for cats and small cage animals such as rabbits and hamsters. I also have experience with fish, iguanas and small livestock.

Do you care for pets in your own home?

No, I do not take pets into my own home because I own 3 of my own dogs. I care for all pets in my charge in the comfort and safety of their own homes. This provides a secure, familiar environment to pets, thus helping ease the stress of your absence.

Will you come to my home more than three times a day if needed?

Yes, for pet sitting a normal day would be three visits of a minimum of 45 minutes, a fourth visit can be arranged for a nominal fee. Dog walking services are charged by the visit

Can I schedule the times you come to my home and visit my pets?

For pet sitting assignments it is the goal of Karen’s Canine Care to keep to your pet’s normal routine so I will come to your home at the times you requested. For dog walking assignments the times are between 10 am – 4pm we can work out a window of time for your pets visit.

What if there is an emergency with my pet?

You will be contacted immediately. You will be required to complete a veterinary release form during the initial consultation. In the event of an emergency and you can’t be reached, I will not hesitate to take your pet to the veterinarian

What does my pet need, as far as shots, leashes, etc…?

Pets must have the following: Rabies vaccine, ID tags, leash, properly fitting collar, readily available food/water bowls and food.

I’ve always brought my pets to a kennel when I’ve gone on vacation. What are the advantages of using a professional pet sitter?

I charge by the visit, not the number of pets. If you have multiple pets, using a pet sitter can save you a considerable amount of money. More importantly, animals like their normal routine. Familiar sights, sounds and toys are very comforting to animals when their humans are not around. My job is to be there for your pets when you can’t be – keeping to their normal routine of exercise, play and diet. I make sure there is little (if any) disruption to their routine. And of course your pets are lavished with lots of love and attention. Also using a professional pet sitter gives you peace of mind that your pet is being cared for and given one on one attention. There are no cages to stay in, no extra charges for exercise or diet, and most importantly no risk of illness from other pets.

How do I make a reservation?

You can call me at 860-819-0654 or contact me via the contact page on my website. We will then set up the initial “Meet and Greet”.

How far in advance do I need to make reservations for pet sitting?

Reservations should be made as far in advance as possible to insure availability, but a minimum of 48 hours is required. Should you have a shorter time frame please call and see if there is any availability – we will have had to already met and done all the paperwork though.

Will you provide references upon request?

Yes, references will be given on the initial “Meet and Greet”

What kind of pet education and or certification do you have?

I have over 25 years experience owning and working with dogs. I volunteer for the Sadie Mae Rescue organization and the National Great Pyrenees rescue. I am a member of ASPCA. In addition, I am certified in pet first aid and also an accredited pet sitter through Pet Sitters International. I continually educate myself through professional books, magazines and videos on animal (canine) behavior and training. I am a member of two trade organizations: Pet Sitters International and Professional United Pet Sitters.

What forms of payments do you take?

I currently take cash and checks. I will be taking credit cards and paypal in the future. Payment is due at time of service.
